LPCANC Nancy Howell Fellowship Program

Introduction:

LPCANC is pleased to accept applications for its Fellowship Award program. This program is designed to support graduate students and assist in the development and recognition of those who demonstrate leadership potential as a counseling student and future LPC. Supported by student registration fees from the Annual Conference, this Fellowship provides student members incentive for student involvement, and the recipient(s) with opportunities to interact and work with the LPCANC Board and membership to foster professional relationships and inform students on the needs and concerns of the Counseling Profession. The December Award is named in honor of Nancy Howell, who was a board member of LPCANC and died in a car accident in 2004.

Purpose:

This program is designed to: recognize and encourage excellence in future LPCs, provide opportunities for leadership among counseling students, assist students in increasing awareness of board activities and the current issues faced by LPCs in NC, and to introduce counselors-in-training to leaders and future colleagues in the counseling profession. The goal of the Fellowship Program is to better prepare students for active leadership and advocacy in their chosen profession.

Scope:

The award(s) is granted to a counseling student currently enrolled in a graduate program in Counseling and who is an active student member of LPCANC. The LPCANC Board will award two (2) Fellowships per year, one on June 1 and the other on December 1 .

Board Members and previous recipients are ineligible for the award.

Award:

  • $500 payable in 2 increments of $250
  • Free attendance to Annual Conference
  • Recognition at LPCANC Annual Conference Awards ceremony
  • Certificate of Recognition

Application:

  • Application form (Click here for a copy)
  • A 300 word goal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation, preferably from professors, advisors, supervisors or other professional counselors with direct knowledge of characteristics and activities of the applicant's training program
    **Note: All letters of recommendation should be scanned and sent electronically. No emails without hand-written signature can be accepted

Selection:
The award is granted by a Special Committee of LPCANC Board Members:

  • Awards Committee Chairperson (or designee)
  • University Relations Committee Chairperson (or designee)
  • Graduate Student Representative
  • President
  • President-elect

Recipients will be selected on the following criteria:

  • Excellence of written recommendations
  • Enthusiasm of fellowship experience, as evidenced by goals, interests, and commitment to LPCANC
  • History of involvement with LPCANC and other counseling organizations
  • Demonstrated leadership

Responsibilities:

  • Attend annual conference
  • Contribute 20 hours of service to a Committee, Task Force, or other special project to be determine by President and Executive Council and based upon interests, talents and suggestions included in recipient's application
  • Provide a written project report denoting the contributions to the LPCANC Board and/or Executive Council
  • Attend Annual Conference
  • Participate in the Board meeting at the Annual Conference

Timeline:

  • Apr 1/Oct 1: First notice of Fellowship
  • Apr 15/Oct 15: Second notice of Fellowship
  • May 1/Nov 1: Deadline for Application. All applications materials must be received. Committee begins review
  • May 15/Nov 15: Recipient notified
  • June 1/Dec 1: Written acceptance of Fellowship Award and conditions due
