Description: Working with combat veterans diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be a rewarding, yet frustrating experience. The veteran has been trained and indoctrinated in a manner of thinking which does not readily accept them having a problem. A primary issue in counseling is the issue of trust and veterans are in many cases dealing with self-trust issues, so trusting another person is really difficult. The counselor can be extremely productive in helping the veteran adapt to, if not overcome, some of their PTSD symptoms with empathy, acceptance and patience.

About the Presenter: William H. Butler, MS, LPC, NCC retired from the United States Marine Corps in 2006 after 30 years of service and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005. He is a graduate of Park University with a degree in Social Psychology, and received his Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Capella University. He started working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in 2006 and received his LPC in 2008. He is still working for the VA at the Greenville NC Vet Center, working specifically with combat veterans. Additionally, he provides Bereavement counseling to survivors of service members killed in action, and couples counseling related to the service member’s PTSD.
