Description:
Addressing substance use, abuse and dependency is
a challenge for many therapists and organizations
serving adolescents. The journey often begins with
the question, “How involved is the child with
substance use?” Professional evaluation is essential
to determine the extent of their substance use, the
type of treatment needed, and appropriate aftercare
placement. A secondary diagnosis of mental illness
or learning problems may need to be considered in
placement for treatment of the dually diagnosed. Left
untreated substance use may turn into abuse and later
to dependency. Research indicates the importance of
early intervention and involving the whole family
in treatment. These issues will be explored through
current research and evidenced based programs.
