Motivational Interviewing: Concepts, Principles, and Application (8:30-12:30)

Presenter: Todd F. Lewis, PhD, LPC

Description: This preconference workshop will cover the key principles, concepts, and underlying assumptions of motivational interviewing. Participants will learn about the "spirit" of MI practice, how to recognize change talk, and how to counsel in a manner that minimizes resistance and enhances intrinsic motivation to change. Participants also will gain practice in generating change plans as well as strategies to strengthen one's commitment to change. Emphasis will be placed on understanding MI principles and concepts as well as application. This workshop is intended for those who have had limited exposure to MI, or for those who would like to incorporate more MI into their practice.

Bio: Todd F. Lewis, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Counseling and Counselor Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina and a National Certified Counselor. Dr. Lewis's research interests include the application of motivational interviewing to help reduce health related risks among college students and adults. He has received training in advanced motivational interviewing and supervision/peer consultation of MI, using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity scale. Dr. Lewis also counsels part time at the Presbyterian Counseling Center in Greensboro, where he applies motivational interviewing in helping clients with opiate addiction.


Come As You Are: Building Blocks for Helping Clients Make Peace with Food & Their Bodies (1:30-5:30)

Description: This hands-on, interactive workshop will explore a variety of body image issues including shape, size, color, age, facial hair, etc., and will teach participants ways to help clients make peace with their bodies and with food. Topics will include ways to help clients: stop the cycle of chronic dieting and body bashing; understand the importance of permission-giving versus deprivation; accept instead of reject their bodies and identities; and engage in healthy behaviors of self-satisfaction and self affirmation. Bios:
Maria Brunelli Paredes is a licensed professional counselor with experience in public school, acute care, college counseling, hospice, and support group settings. Within these settings, Maria has worked with children, adolescents, families, college students, parents who have experienced pregnancy and/or infant loss, and young adult women with eating disorders and/or body image issues. Beginning in the fall of 2009, she will be a staff counselor at Wake Forest University and serve as outreach coordinator. She has presented at the local, state, and national level, taught graduate level classes, and is currently completing her doctoral degree in Counseling & Counselor Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her interests include women with eating disorders, the English Language Learner population, animal-assisted therapy, and motivational interviewing.

Julie Duffy Dillon is a registered dietitian, counselor, university lecturer, and author with over 10 years experience helping people work toward a healthy relationship with food. Julie completed her undergraduate degree at Ohio University in Dietetics and her Master’s of Science degree in Community Counseling at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as a pediatric dietitian. She has also worked with Moses Cone Hospital, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Elon University, Star Aquatics Swim Club Team, High Point Regional Health System, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. Julie currently works in a Greensboro private practice specializing in disordered eating, athletic performance, and infant feeding.

Sara DeHart Young is a Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. Sara completed her undergraduate degree at Guilford College in Psychology and her Master’s of Science degree in Art Therapy at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Sara has been a clinician for 16 years and a university instructor at Mississippi State University for 10 years. She has worked in a variety of treatment settings including inpatient psychiatric, intensive in-home family therapy, school-based therapy, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro and in private practice. Sara utilizes an interface of art therapy and traditional counseling in her work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families to help individuals tap into their unique and creative healing potential. She specializes in working with adolescents and young adults with eating/body image disorders, anxiety and depressive disorders, self-esteem and relationship issues.
