Ethical and Compassionate Response to Diverse Populations (9:00am-Noon)

Description: Panel Presentation and Case Review: working with diverse populations can represent challenging situations for Counselors and mental health treatment specialists must be alert to ethical issues which may arise in the therapeutic relationship. This panel presentation will address the basic ethical standards of care and particular focus will be on diverse populations who present for treatment and for whom Counselors strive to provide compassionate and ethical treatment protocols. Case studies and practice guidelines will be presented. This workshop meets criteria for 3-hour “ethics” continuing education hours.

Ethical Considerations and Practical Strategies while with Minor Clients and Their Families (1:00pm-4:00pm)

Presenter: Jackie Perry, MS, LPC, NCC

Description: Counselors who work with minors are deeply aware of the ethical dilemmas and complicated issues that can so quickly arise. This workshop will provide an overview of the ACA Code of Ethics as it specifically relates to minor clients. Practical strategies that can help counselors avoid unethical situations with minors or their families will be reviewed. The format will include presentation, problem-based case studies and large group discussion.

About the Presenter: Jackie Perry is a Licensed Professional Counselor who currently works in private practice at Cornerstone Counseling Center in Hickory, North Carolina. She has been working as a counselor since 1991 and limits her practice to working with adolescents and families dealing with a variety of issues. These issues include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, ADHD, oppositional or rebellious behaviors, mood disorders, and divorce. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Duke University and her Master’s degree from Georgia State University. Jackie is passionate about training new counselors to effectively respond to the needs of today’s teens. When she is not counseling, speaking or training, Jackie enjoys spending time with her husband John and their three children.


Trauma & the Brain: Impact and Treatment Issues (9:00am-4:30pm)

Presenter: Robert E. Longo MRC, LPC, NCC, BCIA-EEG

Description: Trauma, both physical and emotion can have significant impact on the brain. Trauma from abuse in young children alters the physical nature of the brain. Physical trauma from head injury can have a significant impact on overall brain function. QEEG brain mapping can easy detect trauma and guide the clinician in determining how biofeedback and/or neurofeedback techniques can help benefit the client. Program objectives include the following:

  1. Participants will understand the basic working of the brain and impact of trauma on the brain.
  2. What parts of the brain are most commonly affected from childhood trauma (abuse and neglect).
  3. Participants will learn how basic biofeedback techniques can be applied in clinical practice.

About the Presenter: Robert E. Longo, LPC, NCC , is in private practice specializing in qEEG Brain Mapping, Biofeedback, and Neurofeedback, and he serves as a consultant, educator, trainer, and author dedicated to working with youth and sexual abuse prevention and treatment. He was previously Director of Clinical Training/Stress Reduction Clinic & Biofeedback Lab, and Clinical Director (2005-2008); Old Vineyard Behavioral Health Services, a psychiatric hospital, in Winston-Salem, NC, and Corporate Director of Special Programming and Clinical Training for New Hope Treatment Centers, Charleston, South Carolina. Rob's focus is on sexual abuse prevention and treatment with youth, and the treatment of youth with serious behavioral problems. He has consulted and presented internationally in the field of sexual abuser assessment, treatment, and program development, and is co-founder and first President of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers. Rob was previously Director of the Safer Society Foundation, Inc. and the Safer Society Press from 1993 through 1998.

Rob was the director of the Sex Offender Correctional Treatment Program; Mental Health Division, State of Oregon; Oregon State Hospital, Salem, Oregon from April 1983 through August 1989. He was formerly the Director of the Sex Offender Unit; North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center; Gainesville, Florida and consultant to the sex offender programs for the State of Florida.
