Continuing Education: Counseling Veterans Using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Description: This presentation will address Cognitive Processing Therapy. It will define CPT and its development as a PTSD intervention for combat induced PTSD. Particular attention will be paid to outlining the 12 week intervention that challenges the client's construction of traumatic events.

Presenters: Gwendolyn Keith Newsome received her doctoral degree from North Carolina State University. She also earned a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from North Carolina A&T. She is currently an assistant professor in the CACREP accredited Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. For the past seven years she has also worked with the Veteran’s Administration at the Raleigh Vet Center in Raleigh NC where she has provided individual and group therapy to combat veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). She also works with veterans who experience an exacerbation of their trauma symptoms as a result of culture.
