Human Givens

A new approach to emotional health and clear thinking.

The Human Givens [HG] approach to therapy is a significant advancement utilizing other current approaches to therapy and is heavily based in current brain research.  It provides a very accessible understanding of psychosis, depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder and personality disorder.  Human Givens recognizes the importance of REM sleep for mental health.  This, along with  combining hypnosis and metaphor to access the subconscious and a technique they developed, called the Rewind Technique, allows most therapists to significantly help clients in one to three sessions.  Clients have been brought out of depression three times faster than other techniques and medication. It has also been effectively used with physical issues, such as shingles and Neuropathy. Other techniques, such as EMDR, are also used by Human Givens therapists.

LPCANC offered a 6 hour HG overview and a 1.5 hour session on HG and Substance Use Disorder at its annual conference in October.  Sue Saunders, from the Human Givens Institute in Ireland, where HG was developed, presented.  Over 70 attendees learned about HG and were so impressed, most stated they wanted to receive formal training in this innovative approach.  It is our hope that enough interest will be shown in this revolutionary therapy that we can bring more HG trainers to the US to provide a series of trainings leading up to full HG Therapist designation.

This is an opportunity for LPCs to be ahead of the curve in providing briefer and more effective therapy for their clients.  With fewer sessions and the specific techniques used, the issues of therapist burnout, transference and counter-transference are greatly diminished and often don't occur.  The North Carolina counseling profession is a leader in the US and this innovation will help us stay there.

HG Webinar on Hypnosis

The authors exquisitely describe one of the most important psychological insights of our age: how we are all born with a rich natural inheritance – a partially formed mind containing a genetic treasure-house of innate knowledge patterns: the ‘human givens’. We all experience these givens as physical and emotional needs, powerful forces that must be satisfactorily met in our environment if our minds are to unfold and develop to their fullest potential. How these innate patterns connect up with the world, and unfold in it, determine our own and our family’s emotional health and happiness – as well as the maturity and humanity of the society we create around us.
