PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Many patients interfere with the very progress they seek through resistance to the psychotherapy process. Not infrequently, they terminate prematurely before reaching their goals. This results in tragic consequences for the client, as well as frustration and a sense of failure for the therapist.

By adopting an active, selective and precise focus, as well as an experiential, attachment-based and emotionally engaged stance, therapists can create the level of safety and attunement patients need to risk abandoning chronic defensive patterns and shift to healthier functioning. By following proven principles and detailed clinical maps, participants will be introduced to techniques for bypassing or restructuring defenses efficiently, keeping anxiety in an optimal range of tolerance toward the goal of compassionately and effectively facilitating transformational experiences. This approach helps patients access and realign with healthy, buried and previously inaccessible internal resources indicative of resilience as rapidly as possible.

A brief didactic overview and patient video(s) will be used to demonstrate moment to moment methods for moving beyond symptom management to enable patients to abandon chronic coping patterns that were once necessary, but have long outlived their usefulness and access deeply buried, unconscious conflicts, to facilitate corrective experiences, activate resilience and restore vitality.

PRESENTER

Steven S. Shapiro, Ph.D is a clinical psychologist in private practice in suburban Philadelphia with over twenty-five years of clinical and teaching experience. Dr. Shapiro has been practicing various forms of Experiential Dynamic Therapy(Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy/ STDP and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy/ AEDP), since the mid-1990's. He has been studying withDr. Diana Fosha, the developer of AEDP, since 2003. Dr. Shapiro is a Senior Faculty and Founding Member of the AEDP Institute in NYC. He provides lectures, training groups and individual consultation nationally. His presentations are often commended for translating complex clinical theory into clear, precise, and practical techniques which are easily understandable and can be applied immediately in clinical settings by therapists of various orientations. For sixteen years, he was Director of Psychology at an emergency psychiatric hospital, where he provided intensive individual and family treatment, and functioned as a treatment team leader, with a range of severe presentations and involuntarily committed patients, including severe personality disorders, trauma, substance abuse and psychiatric emergencies. Experience in this setting informs much of his work on transforming resistance with challenging patients.

 Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

What is Psychodynamic Pyschotherapy? Some question the validity of such theoretical orientation as one which is not typically considered an evidenced-based modality; click here for an article clarifying this erroneous myth about Psychoanalysis. In the article, the author outlines the basic tenets of Psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as citing research conducted in the US.
