LPCANC Successfully Advocates for a New North Carolina Department of Insurance Policy on Licensed Professional Counselor Associates

April 8, 2010

As most of our members are aware, LPCANC successfully lobbied the General Assembly in 2009 to amend the Licensed Professional Counselors licensing law in Article 24 of Chapter 90 of the General Statutes. One of the major amendments in the law was the creation of a new license, the Licensed Professional Counselor Associate.

On April 1, 2010, the North Carolina Department of Insurance issued an Advisory Notice to insurers across the state which provides that insurers must recognize Licensed Professional Counselor Associates. More specifically, the Advisory Notice states: "Insurers that write health benefit plans, subscriber contracts, or policies of insurance that provide benefits for services of licensed professional counselors must recognize that the licensure of 'licensed professional counselor associate' under Article 24 of Chapter 90 of the North Carolina General Statutes satisfies the licensure requirement in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 58-50-30(c3)."

This is good news for Licensed Professional Counselors across North Carolina. Thank you to the LPCANC advocacy team for its efforts to institute this policy.
