Counseling Service Members and their families

Description:  

Have you ever counseled service members and/or their families and found it to be challenging? Or maybe you want to learn how to provide more effective counseling services to our great service members and their families. Then this presentation is for you. You will learn the rewards and challenges of what it is like to work as a counselor within the military culture and proven effective strategies.

*Please note this training will place an emphasis on working with our Marines, Sailors, and families.*

 

The presentation will review the following.

Learning Objective:

1.      Provide insight into military culture.

2.      Discuss the unique challenges of providing counseling services to service members and their families.

3.      Review effective strategies and counseling modalities for working with service members and their families.

 

 

About the Presenter:

Amy Bane is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Clinical Supervisor, Certified Clinical Military Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, Certified Clinical Supervisor, and Master Addiction Counselor with over 15 years of combined experience in counseling and counseling supervision. Her career began working as a counselor with Pitt County Mental Health in 2003 and she transitioned to working as a counselor with PORT Health Services (formerly PORT Human Services) in 2004 when they took over as the provider for the county services. During her 11 years with PORT Health Services she worked as a counselor until 2007, served as the Program Supervisor for their Adult Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Abuse Clinic from 2007-2011, and then the Program Supervisor for their Outpatient Opioid Treatment Program from 2011-2015. In addition, Amy was the co-owner of Carolina Assessment and Treatment Services, LLC  that specialized in providing DWI and court ordered assessments in Greenville, North Carolina from 2008-2015. In addition, she was an adjunct instructor in the Department of Addictions Study at East Carolina University in 2015. She relocated to Jacksonville, North Carolina in 2015 to join her husband with his new civilian assignment aboard Camp Lejeune after he retired from 22 years in the Marine Corps. She became a Military and Family Life Counselor in the beginning of 2017. She has been assigned to and served as the Military and Family Life Counselor with the Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, North Carolina, 2nd Marine Division Headquarters Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and is on a current assignment with 2nd Tanks Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In addition, by special request, she serves as a behavioral health subject matter expert on the 2nd Marine Division Force Preservation Council for the Commanding General aboard Camp Lejeune. She has a combined experience of 28 years as a military child, military spouse, and working with service members and their families.
